Carpet Cleaning FAQ: Answers from Dr. Carpet
Answers about our 11-step process, drying times, stains, pet urine, rugs, upholstery, pure water window and solar cleaning, and the towns we serve.
Carpet cleaning
What is the 11-step carpet cleaning process at Dr. Carpet?
It is the same sequence on every job: inspection with a UV light, professional vacuuming, a pre-spray matched to the fiber, counter-rotating brush agitation, spot and urine treatment, hot water extraction, extra dry passes, deodorizing when needed, pH neutralization, grooming and turbo drying with air movers. Skipping steps is what leaves carpets sticky or smelling again a week later, so we do not skip them.
Why does carpet get dirty again so fast after some cleanings?
Residue is the usual reason. Alkaline cleaning products left in the fibers stay slightly sticky and grab soil from every footstep. Dr. Carpet ends each carpet cleaning with a neutralizing rinse that brings the fibers back to about pH 7 to 7.5, so nothing is left behind to attract dirt and the carpet stays soft.
How long does carpet take to dry after cleaning?
Usually a few hours. We make extra dry passes after the extraction and leave professional air movers running, which takes most of the moisture out before we leave. Thick wool, heavy pile and humid winter days can add time. You can walk on the carpet in clean socks right away.
Is steam cleaning the same as hot water extraction?
Yes, people use both names for the same method, but extraction is only one of our 11 steps. On its own it rinses the surface. The inspection, pre-spray, brush agitation and pH neutralization around it are what get the soil out of the base of the fibers and keep the carpet from resoiling.
Will every stain come out of my carpet?
Most food, drink, mud and traffic stains do. Some marks are not dirt but damage, such as bleach spots, dye loss or fibers burned by old urine, and cleaning cannot put color back. We tell you which is which during the inspection, before you approve the price, and carpet dyeing can sometimes restore lost color.
How often should carpet be professionally cleaned?
Every 12 to 18 months for most homes, and every 6 to 12 months with pets, small children or heavy foot traffic. Many carpet warranties also require periodic hot water extraction by a professional. Vacuuming twice a week in between keeps grit from cutting the fibers.
Can you fix carpet that has ripples or loose seams?
Yes. Ripples mean the carpet has come loose from its tack strips, and we restretch it with a power stretcher so it lies flat again. We also repair seams, patch burns and replace damaged sections with matching carpet when a remnant is available.
Pet urine and odor
How do you find pet urine you cannot see?
With a UV light. Dried urine glows under ultraviolet light, so we scan the room during the inspection and mark every spot, including the ones that are invisible in daylight. That map decides where the enzyme treatment goes.
Will the pet urine smell come back after cleaning?
Not if the urine only reached the carpet and its backing, because we treat it at the source with enzymes that break down the uric salts, then extract it. If it soaked into the pad or the subfloor, that spot may need the pad replaced. We tell you during the inspection, before you pay for anything.
Can you remove smoke and mildew odors from a house?
Yes. Odor control starts by finding the source, because a smell coming from carpet pad, upholstery or a damp corner will return if it is only covered with fragrance. Depending on the source we combine cleaning, enzyme or oxidizing treatments and deodorizing.
Are your products safe for pets once the carpet is dry?
Yes. The enzyme and cleaning products we use are safe for pets once dry. Keep pets off the damp areas for a few hours after treatment, mostly so they do not track soil back onto the clean carpet.
Can urine stains that turned yellow be removed?
Often they can be lightened a lot. Old urine can bleach or burn the carpet dye, and that part is color loss rather than dirt, so cleaning alone cannot bring it back. Carpet dyeing is the next step when the fiber allows it.
Upholstery and mattresses
How do you clean a sofa without damaging the fabric?
We read the manufacturer cleaning code and test the fabric first. Code W fabrics take water-based cleaning, code S fabrics get a solvent or very low-moisture method, and delicate fibers like velvet or linen get extra care. After that the sofa follows the same steps we use on carpet, ending with pH neutralization so it dries soft.
How long does a sofa take to dry after cleaning?
Usually a few hours, depending on the fabric, the cushion fill and the airflow in the room. We control the moisture and use air movers to speed it up. Microfiber and synthetic blends tend to dry fastest.
Can you deep clean a mattress?
Yes. Mattress cleaning includes vacuuming to pull out dust and skin flakes, treatment of sweat, urine and other stains, low-moisture extraction and deodorizing. UVC sterilization can be added for allergy-prone households. The mattress is usually ready to use again the same day.
Do you clean leather furniture?
Yes. Leather is cleaned with pH-balanced products made for it, never with the upholstery chemistry used on fabric, and then conditioned so it stays supple. We check the type of leather first, because aniline and pigmented leather react differently to cleaning.
Can you clean dining chairs, ottomans and headboards?
Yes. Dining chairs, ottomans, headboards, sectionals and loose cushions all follow the same fabric test and cleaning process as a sofa. It is often worth doing them in the same visit as the carpet or the couch.
Is Scotchgard protection worth it after cleaning?
For light fabrics, homes with kids or pets, and high-traffic carpet, usually yes. 3M Scotchgard is applied right after cleaning, while the fibers are open, and it makes spills bead up long enough to blot them before they turn into stains. It does not make fabric stain-proof.
Rugs, tile and floors
How do you clean area rugs made of wool or viscose?
Every rug starts with a fiber and dye test, because wool, viscose, cotton, jute and synthetics react differently to water and heat. Wool is cleaned with wool-safe products, and viscose gets a low-moisture method so it does not brown or lose its sheen. Dry soil is removed first, then the rug is cleaned, rinsed, groomed and dried.
Do you clean Oriental and Persian rugs?
Yes. Hand-knotted Oriental and Persian rugs get a gentler process than machine-made rugs: thorough dry soil removal, a colorfastness test, cleaning with wool-safe products, and careful attention to the fringe. Rugs with unstable dyes or heavy damage are discussed with you before any water touches them.
Can dirty grout be made to look new again?
Often it gets very close to its original color. We break down the soil inside the grout, agitate it and extract the dirty water instead of spreading it around like a mop does. Grout stained for many years may need a color seal, and sealing after cleaning keeps it clean much longer.
Do you clean marble, travertine and other natural stone?
Yes, with stone-safe products only. Marble, travertine and limestone are etched by the acidic cleaners that work on ceramic tile, so stone gets pH-neutral chemistry, gentle agitation and an optional penetrating sealer.
Can you clean hardwood and luxury vinyl floors?
Yes. Hardwood is cleaned with products that do not soak the boards or dull the finish, and luxury vinyl plank gets a deep clean that pulls soil out of the texture and the bevels. We do not use steam or flood water on either floor.
Can faded or bleached carpet be repaired?
Often, yes. Carpet dyeing can restore color to bleach spots, sun-faded areas and urine discoloration on nylon and wool carpet, which is far cheaper than replacing the room. We test the fiber first, because polyester and olefin do not take dye well.
Windows and solar panels
What is 0 TDS pure water window cleaning?
It is a final rinse with water filtered down to about 0 TDS, meaning almost no total dissolved solids. Tap water leaves calcium, magnesium and silica on the glass as it dries, which shows up as spots. Pure water has nothing left in it, so the glass dries spot-free on its own, with no towel.
How high can you clean windows from the ground?
About 40 feet. Our water-fed poles carry pure water to the brush head, which covers most two-story and many three-story homes without ladders on the roof or the landscaping.
Can you remove hard water stains from glass?
Usually, yes, but it is a separate service from window cleaning. Hard water deposits from sprinklers bond to the glass and do not rinse off. Glass restoration uses specialized compounds to remove the minerals, and we tell you after an inspection if the glass is already etched.
How do you clean solar panels without damaging them?
With a pre-rinse, a panel-safe cleaning solution when needed, soft non-abrasive brushes and a 0 TDS pure water rinse. Nothing abrasive or high-pressure touches the glass, and the panels dry naturally without spots.
How often should solar panels be cleaned in the East Bay?
Once or twice a year for most homes, and more often in dusty inland areas like Brentwood, Antioch and Livermore, near farmland or construction, or under trees that drop pollen and sap. Spring after pollen season and late summer before the rains are the usual times.
Will cleaning my solar panels increase energy production?
Removing dust, pollen and bird droppings lets sunlight reach the cells again. How much your output changes depends on how dirty the panels were and on your system, so we do not promise a percentage. Many owners compare their monitoring app before and after.
